From a Turkic source, cf. Kazakh теңге (teñge), Bashkir тәңкә (təñkə) perhaps from the Russian дань. First used in the singular form де́ньга, деньга́ (dénʹga, denʹgá, “ancient coin”), preserved in modern Russian as деньга́ (denʹgá, “money, dough (colloquial)”).
