Etymology

From Middle Dutch wichelen, wigelen, wijchelen, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *wigulōną, *wihulōną (to conjure, divine). Related to Old English wiglian. Originally a frequentative verb (suffixed with -elen) related to wikken, which is derived from Proto-Germanic *wikkōną. More at witch.
