From Middle Dutch wervelen. By surface analysis, werven + -elen; this frequentative verb was formed from werven when that verb still had the meaning "to turn" (compare Old Dutch *wervan). This meaning is also seen in the related noun wervel (“vertebra”), which originally meant "something that turns or twists", referring perhaps to the shape of the spinal column.
