Borrowed from Middle Low German sneppe, after the long, thin beak of the bird, from or related to Old Saxon *snabul, from Proto-Germanic *snabulaz (“snout, beak, mouth”). Cognate of German Schnepfe, Dutch snip, Faroese mýrisnípa. First attested in 1664.
