From Old Norse skemta, from either Proto-Germanic *skammatjaną or Proto-Germanic *skammitōną. Cognate with Faroese skemta, Norwegian Nynorsk skjemta, Icelandic skemmta, and Danish skæmte. Equivalent to skämt (“joke”) + -a.
