Attested in local Medieval Latin documents as raudanus, probably of Germanic origin (compare Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (raudan), accusative of 𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌸𐍃 (rauþs, “red”)), from Proto-Germanic *raudaz. Cognate with Spanish roano.
