Etymology 2
Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic рꙑсь (rysĭ), from Proto-Slavic *rysь.[1] A widely perpetrated folk etymology links its name to its homonym, claiming that the animal is named for the laughter-like vocalisations it uses to distance itself from its now mature young.[2]
