From the Greek φασόλι (fasóli, “bean”), from Ancient Greek φάσηλος (phásēlos, “kidney bean”). Possibly influenced/mediated by Hungarian paszuly, however note dialectal Greek φασούλι (fasoúli, “bean”).

In Croatia and parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, this has some regional usage, and the usual word in literary idiom is grȁh.
