From Proto-West Germanic *notu, from Proto-Germanic *nutō (“use, enjoyment”), from Proto-Indo-European *newd- (“to acquire, make use of”). Cognate with Old Frisian note (“income from agriculture and animal husbandry”), Middle Dutch not (“income from the land”), Old High German nuz (“use”, noun). Related to Old English nytt (“use”), Old English nēotan (“to use, enjoy, possess”), Old English nēat (“cattle, property”). More at neat.
