Probably derived from Latin nucleus (perhaps the variant form nuculeus), from nux (“nut”), or from the diminutive nucleolus;[1] alternatively from nuceu(m), nuceus (“of nuts”), with influence from nocciola.[2] Compare Sicilian nòzzulu.
