Borrowed from Middle French cap, from Old Occitan cap, from Latin caput.

Perhaps related to kopen (“to buy, trade”), possibly from Old Frisian kāp (“purchase”), or otherwise from Latin capio (“I seize”). Attested before kapen; originally only attested in the phrase ter kaap varen.
