From Malay jangkar, probably from Classical Persian لنگر (langar, “anchor”), probably from Ancient Greek ἄγκυρα (ánkura), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enk- (“corner, hirn”). Doublet of angker, anjar, anjer, and anjir.
