From Proto-Polynesian *qilo-ŋa. Cognates include Tongan ʻilonga (“sign; to be marked”) and Samoan iloga (“sign; to be distinct”).
Equivalent to ilo (“to be aware of”) + -ga, where the original noun meaning ("mark, sign") was lost in Tokelauan, replaced by the derived fakailoga.
