Etymology

Possibly ultimately from Sanskrit हृदय (hṛdaya, soul, mind, spirit, literally heart), according to Zorc (1982). Compare Indonesian daya, Balinese ᬋᬤᬬ (redaya), Javanese ꦢꦿꦶꦪ (driya) / ꦮꦂꦢꦪ (wardaya), Old Javanese ḥṛdaya (mind), and Pali hadaya (feeling, literally heart). Many sources say it is from Cebuano haraya, but Zorc (1982) does not believe so.
