Or from Old Galician-Portuguese dereita, feminine form of dereito, from Latin dīrectus (“straight”), from dīrigō (“lay straight; direct; distribute”), from dis- + regō (“to rule, govern”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ-. Compare Spanish derecha, Catalan dreta, French droite, Italian dritta, Romanian dreapta.
