Vietnamese
Pronunciation
Etymology 1
From Proto-Vietic *duː (“shelter”). There are related words in many neighbouring languages. Compare Lao ຍູ (nyū) (as in ຄັນຍູ (khan nyū)) and Khmer យូ (yuu) (as in តាំងយូ (tangyuu)). The distribution within both Tai languages and Austroasiatic does not indicate great time depth, so they might be borrowed from Vietnamese instead.
Noun

Usage notes
- Dù (and its related forms) is most often seen in written works and formal speech. In colloquial spoken Vietnamese, speakers would prefer to use có...(thì) or some other structures instead to express what English speakers would use even if for. For example:
- Có mệt thì vẫn phải làm cho xong đã chứ.
- Even if you're tired, you still have (a task) you gotta complete.
Derived terms
- dù cho
- dù rằng
- mặc dù (although)
