From Middle Irish cliste (“ready, quick”), from Proto-Celtic *kel-, of uncertain origin, perhaps Proto-Indo-European *kel- (“to drive”) similar to Latin celer (“swift, quick”). However, compare cleas (“trick, feat”).[1]
