From icelui, from ici (“here”) + lui (“him”) or from Vulgar Latin *ecce illui, (genitive-)dative masculine singular of *ecce ille (influenced by Latin cui 'to whom'; cf. French lui), from Latin ecce + ille. Compare Italian colui, cf. also Romanian acelui.
