Borrowed from French canal, from Old French canal, from Latin canālis (“channel; canal”), from canna (“reed, cane”), from Ancient Greek κάννα (kánna, “reed”), from Akkadian 𒄀 (qanû, “reed”), from Sumerian 𒄀𒈾 (gi.na). Doublet of cainéal “channel”.
