Possibly from an unattested Old Norse *bryggja, from Proto-Germanic *brewwaną (“to brew”), a class 2 strong verb. It would have been the verb of the actually attested Old Norse past participle brugginn. Compare with Old Swedish bryggia.
bryggja
From Middle Norwegian bryggja (“to brew”), from the unattested infinitive Old Norse *bryggja of the actually attested past participle brugginn. From earlier Proto-Germanic *brewwaną (“to brew”), and ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European [Term?] root *bʰrewh₁- (“to boil, brew”).
bryggja (present tense bryggjer or bryggjar, past tense brygde or bryggja, passive infinitive bryggjast, present participle bryggjande, imperative brygg)
See the etymology of the corresponding lemma form.
bryggja
From Proto-Germanic *brugjǭ, whence also English bridge.
