From Old Swedish bedragha, from Middle Low German bedregen, from Old Saxon bidriogan, from Proto-West Germanic *bidreugan. By surface analysis, be- + draga, etymologically equivalent to be- + dryga. Displaced native svika in this sense.

The apocopic form bedra is used much more often in today's Swedish.
