From Old Swedish afliva (also spelled as aflifva, earliest attested in 16th century). Equivalent to av- + liv + -a. Cognate of Norwegian Bokmål avlive, Danish aflive, Icelandic aflífa, Dutch aflijven.
avliva (present avlivar, preterite avlivade, supine avlivat, imperative avliva)
Usually when describing animals, but occasionally to describe humans.
