Last part from Old Norse vernd, vǫrn (“defence”), from Proto-Germanic *warīniz (“warding off, defense”), from both *warjaną (“to ward off, defend against, stop”), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to watch, guard, heed, notice”) + and from *-īniz (forms abstract nouns), from *-ij(i)- and *-niz (forms abstract nouns), from Proto-Indo-European *-nis.
