Texel
Texel (plural Texels)
First attested as tesla in 772 or 776. Ultimately from Old Dutch Tesla. Likely derived from (a compound of) Proto-Germanic *tehswô (“right, southern”). A derivation from *þehslô- (“adze”) (referring here to an adze-shaped elevated area or to the supposed adze-like shape of the island) is less likely. The spelling with x is due to influence of West Frisian Teksel.
