Etymology
Late 1945, from Mandarin 高雄 (Gāoxióng) Wade–Giles romanization: Kao¹-hsiung², from 高雄 (Takao) (Takao), from Hokkien 打狗 (Tá-káu) (Takau), from Siraya takau (“bamboo forest”).
