18th century, from Grammatik + -er. Formally corresponding to Old High German grammatihhāri, gramatihhāri, which was not continued, cf. Middle High German grāmaticus. Ultimatively from Latin (ars) grammatica, from Ancient Greek γραμματικὴ τέχνη (grammatikḕ tékhnē, “art of letters”).
