From the plural of Middle High German gezīt (“particular time, such as a feast or prayer time”), from Old High German gizit (“passage of time”), from gi- + zit (from Proto-Germanic *tīdiz (“time”)). The modern sense is loaned from cognate Middle Low German getīde, whence also Tide. Related to Zeit.
