From Middle High German bibel, biblie, ultimately from Ancient Greek βιβλία (biblía, “books”).
Bibel f (genitive Bibel, plural Bibeln)
Bibel f (plural Bibels)
From Dutch Bijbel (“Bible”), from Latin Biblia, from Ancient Greek βιβλία (biblía, “books”), plural of βιβλίον (biblíon, “small book”), originally a diminutive of βίβλος (bíblos, “book”), from βύβλος (búblos, “papyrus”) (from the ancient Phoenician city of Byblos which exported this writing material).
bibêl (first-person possessive Bibelku, second-person possessive Bibelmu, third-person possessive Bibelnya)
Although Alkitab and Bibel are synonymous, the usages are different. Most Christian denominations prefer to refer to the Bible as Alkitab, while Bibel may have a negative interpretation as it is used to discredit it.
