Etymology
First attested in the Magyeong chojip eonhae (馬經抄集諺解 / 마경초집언해), 16th century, as Early Modern Korean 죵아리 (Yale: cwong.ali); equivalent to 종(踵) (jong, “heel”) + 아리 (-ari, suffix).
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈt͡ɕo̞(ː)ŋa̠ɾi]
- Phonetic hangul: [종(ː)아리]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
