Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声) and ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : semantic 气 (“gas”) + abbreviated phonetic 淡 (dàn, “dilute”).
From 淡 (dàn, “dilute”) in 淡氣/淡气 [19th c.], referring to nitrogen diluting oxygen in the air.
