Glyph origin
An unorthodox variant simplified from 沖 (氵 → 冫) that can be found in various historical dictionaries such as the Kangxi dictionary.
Eventually adopted as an official character by the People's Republic of China.

Glyph origin
Simplified from 衝 in the first round simplification of Chinese characters by the People's Republic of China in 1956. Note that 衝 (chōng) and 沖 (chōng) are homonyms in modern standard Chinese.
