Connected to *ἄργος (*árgos) in ἀργεστής (argestḗs, “north-west wind”) and ἀργεννός (argennós, “white”), like ἄνθεμον (ánthemon) to ἄνθος (ánthos, “flower”), yet the latter derivation is difficult. Further connected to ἀργός (argós, “white”). Regarding the plant significations this has together with ἀργεμώνη (argemṓnē, “pale poppy, Papaver argemone; agrimony”) been put to Akkadian 𒅈𒂵𒌋𒌋𒉡 (argamannu, “purple”) which has given rise to the names of various purple plants.
