From Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵreh₂ (“hunt”), cognate with Old Irish ár (“slaughter”) (< Proto-Celtic *agrom) and Avestan 𐬀𐬰𐬭𐬋𐬛𐬀𐬌𐬜𐬍 (azrōdaiδī, “hunt”). See ἄγω (ágō, “to lead”) for the root.
