The "strong" sense is from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *zan¹ (“strong, firm”), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *b-tsan (“strong, firm, steadfast”). Cognate with Tibetan བཙན་པོ (btsan po, “violent, strong”) (STEDT).
The "nail" sense (which MED implicitly does not separate from the "strong" sense) is from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m-(t)syen (“nail, claw”), and cognate with Tibetan སེན (sen, “nail”) (STEDT).
