Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(g/k)aw (to call). Compare Kinnauri ku, Nùng go, Old Chinese (OC *ɦlaːw, *ɦlaːws, “name; to shout, cry”) (STEDT). The extension of the meaning ‘shout, call’ to ‘ask, request’ is parallel to ခေါ် (hkau).
