From Sanskrit धर्म (dharma, “law, regulation, rule; precept; justice; morality; etc”) + Pali anuñña (“consent; permission; sanction”). Cognate with Khmer ធម្មនួញ (thɔɔmmɔɔnuəñ), ធម្មនុញ្ញ (thŏəmmĕəʼnuñ); Lao ທຳມະນູນ (tham ma nūn).
