From Proto-Indo-Iranian *sáȷ́ʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *séǵʰos (power, victory).

Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬵 (hazah), Central Kurdish هێز (hêz), Proto-Germanic *segaz (whence Middle English sige, German Sieg).
