Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀻 (maṭṭī), 𑀫𑀺𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀺𑀆 (mittiā) without cluster simplification, from Sanskrit मृत्तिका (mṛttikā). Doublet of माटी (māṭī) and मट्टी (maṭṭī). Cognate with Punjabi ਮਿੱਟੀ (miṭṭī).
