Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀡 (makkhaṇa) without compensatory lengthening, from Sanskrit म्रक्षण (mrakṣaṇa). Cognate with Punjabi ਮੱਖਣ (makkhaṇ). Displaced Hindi माखन (mākhan) outside of the expression माखन-चोर (mākhan-cor), an epithet of Krishna.
