From Proto-Indo-European *kerk- (“crow, raven”), probably an onamatopoeia. Cognate with Ancient Greek κόραξ (kórax), Old Irish cerc (“hen”), Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬵𐬭𐬐𐬀𐬙𐬀𐬝 (kahrkatat̰, “rooster”), obsolete German Ruch, Old English hrōc (English rook).
