Inherited from Old Punjabi نِوَݨُ (nivaṇu), possibly from Sanskrit नमति (namati). If this is the case, then it is a doublet of نَماز (namāz), نَمَسْتے (namaste) and نَمݨا (namṇā). Related to نِیوِیں (nīvīṉ).
