From Proto-Semitic *buśm-. Compare Jewish Palestinian Aramaic בֻּשְׂמָא (buśmā, “sweet spice or smell”), Classical Syriac ܒܘܣܡܐ (bussāmā, “sweetness, perfume”), Arabic بَشَام (bašām, “balsam; balsam plant”).
