Etymology

Borrowed from Iranian. An ethnonym corresponding to the toponym Բաղասական (Bałasakan, “Balasagan”), like ատրպատիճք (atrpatičkʻ) corresponding to Ատրպատական (Atrpatakan).^[1] -իճ (-ič) is an Iranian ethnic suffix.^[2]

       At that time, Sanēsan, king of the Mazkʿutʿkʿ, nourished an implacable hatred and rancor against his kinsman Xosrov, king of Armenia. And so, he gathered and assembled all the forces of the Honkʿ and the Poxkʿ, of the Tʿawasparkʿ, the Hečmatakkʿ, the Ižmaxkʿ, the Gatʿkʿ, and Głuarkʿ, the Gugarkʿ, the Šičbkʿ, and the Čiłbkʿ and the Bałasčikʿ, and the Egersuankʿ, and masses of other rabble. [It was] an innumrable nomadic host, whose entire large force he led himself.

       And they drove the surviving few before them all the way to the country of the Bałasčikʿ and brought the head of the great king Sanēsan before the king of Armenia.

Usage notes

Attested only in Buzand in the form Բաղասճ-աց (Bałasč-acʻ, genitive plural). Some have wrongly assumed the nominative is *Բաղասճիք (*Bałasčikʻ), but the correct nominative is Բաղասիճք (Bałasičkʻ) as the word contains the Iranian ethnic suffix -իճ (-ič).^[2] Also, the genitive plural of *Բաղասճիք (*Bałasčikʻ) would have been *Բաղասճեաց (*Bałasčeacʻ).
