Inherited from Old Church Slavonic паѭкъ (pajǫkŭ), from Proto-Slavic *pajękъ; equivalent to Proto-Slavic *paǫkъ with epenthetic -j-. Morphologically formed as па- (pa-) + Proto-Indo-European *h₂énkos (“hook, corner”).
