Inherited from Old East Slavic истьць (istĭcĭ). Compare Bulgarian исте́ц (istéc), Polish iściec (“legal owner”). Per Sobolevsky (Lectures 133; quoted in Vasmer), derived from Old East Slavic исто (isto, “capital”) + -ьць (-ĭcĭ) (whence Russian -е́ц (-éc)); original meaning "owner". Cognate with и́стый (ístyj, “real, true”).
