From Proto-Slavic *vьrdlo, an instrumental noun of вря (vrja, “to spring, to boil”) + -ло (-lo, “instrumental suffix”). Probably originally meaning pole, beam as in Ukrainian верло́ (verló, “pole, bat”), dialectal ви́рло (výrlo) or the derivative Bulgarian върли́на (vǎrlína, “long rod”) (cognate with dialectal Czech vrdlina/vrlina (“beam”) /Moravian dialects/).
