Modern adaptation (-έας) of Ancient Greek εἰσαγγελεύς (eisangeleús), original sense 'bailiff' / 'court clerk', from εἰς (eis, “in, into, to”) + ἀγγέλλω (angéllō, “to carry, to deliver, to announce”) + -εύς (-eús). Modern sense acquired in Koine period.
