Barnes was ranked as a three–star recruit by 247Sports.com coming out of high school.[1] He committed to Western Michigan on June 18, 2017, over offers from Cincinnati, Bowling Green, and Central Michigan.[2][3]

Barnes was selected in the sixth round, 184th overall, of the 2023 NFL draft by the New York Jets.[6] On May 5, he signed a four-year contract with the Jets.[7]
Barnes was placed on injured reserve on September 9, 2024.[8]
