Born in Ireland,[5] Kelly worked as photojournalist while a teenager.[6] Working for the Independent News Group, he covered the conflict in Afghanistan for several years, before later moving to fashion photography.[4] In 1996, his photo of a kiss between musicians Bono and Liam Gallagher drew additional exposure and prompted a change in his career.[citation needed]

Kelly subsequently moved to the United States and, as of 2013, he was based in Los Angeles.[7] His work has been published in magazines like Vanity Fair,[8] Playboy,[8] GQ,[9] and Cosmopolitan.[10] His work has been described by GQ España as "irreverent and provocative",[11] and by Photo magazine as "spontaneous and hyper-energetic".[12] Photo magazine also said that "his flashy style has conquered the world of fashion".[13]

Kelly has released two books of his work. The first, titled "Tony's Toys", was self-published in 2014.[14][full citation needed] His second book, "Taken! Entertaining Nudes by Tony Kelly", was released in September 2016 by teNeues.[10] In 2020, Kelly self-published the book "NOWHERE", which was a portrait of Los Angeles during the COVID19 pandemic.[citation needed] A further book, titled "MIAMI", was released in August 2024 by teNeues.[citation needed]
