Alexandra Pelosi conducts interviews with several individuals charged with crimes for participating in the January 6 United States Capitol attack, to understand what brought them there that day, and if their views have changed.[1]
Alexandra Pelosi wanted to make a film focusing on individuals involved in the January 6 United States Capitol attack, including Ronald Sandlin, to better understand their intentions, as they are going to be voters in the next American election.[2] Pelosi went to interview individuals alone or with her husband Michiel Vos, feeling it would be hard to hate her up close as many were with their families.[3]
It was released on October 15, 2023, by HBO.[4]
Brian Lowry of CNN wrote: "Overall, though, the documentary provokes the dispiriting sense that while people with conflicting views can talk, when the gap's this wide and the unwavering belief to disinformation this toxic, there's almost no way to make them hear."[5] Chris Vognar of Rolling Stone wrote: "The Insurrectionist Next Door is both comedy, thanks largely to the fact that Pelosi has no interest in hiding her incredulity, and tragedy, in that she locates the humanity in these people who made some horrible decisions on the basis of a loudly propagated fiction, and will be paying for the rest of their lives."[6]
